Gas Spring Cycle Life Testing: What OEM Buyers Should Verify

Cycle-life claims are useful only when the test conditions are clearly defined. A gas spring described as “tested for many cycles” may perform very differently depending on stroke usage, speed, temperature, mounting angle, and load. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING recommends that OEM buyers review the complete test method instead of comparing cycle numbers alone.

Define One Complete Test Cycle

A cycle normally means one compression movement and one extension movement, but the usable stroke must also be stated. Testing only part of the stroke may reduce seal travel and internal temperature compared with a full-stroke application. Buyers should confirm the starting position, ending position, dwell time, motion speed, and cycles per minute.

The fixture should keep the piston rod aligned with the cylinder. Side loading during a durability test may create abnormal wear that does not represent the intended application. Conversely, an unrealistically perfect laboratory fixture may hide alignment problems in the customer's mechanism.

Monitor Force Before, During, and After Testing

Passing a cycle target is not enough if extension force falls outside the usable range. Force should be measured at defined positions and temperatures before the test, at planned intervals, and after completion. The report should identify the F1 measurement point, stabilization time, test temperature, and instrument accuracy.

A small force change can occur because of temperature variation or normal settling. A sudden or continuing drop may indicate nitrogen leakage, seal damage, or rod-surface wear. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING evaluates force retention together with smooth movement and visible condition.

Inspect More Than Leakage

External oil or gas leakage is an obvious failure, but other problems can appear earlier. Inspect the piston rod for scoring, corrosion, bending, or contamination. Listen for unusual noise and feel for sticking, vibration, or inconsistent damping. End fittings and brackets should also be checked for looseness, deformation, or cracking.

For lockable gas springs, the test must include repeated operation of the release mechanism and verification of locking performance. For dampers, record the change in resistance at the specified velocity. Product type determines the correct acceptance criteria.

Match the Test to the Real Application

A standard room-temperature test is a good production control, but it may not represent outdoor equipment, medical furniture, marine hatches, or high-frequency machinery. Important projects may require hot and cold cycling, corrosion exposure, dust protection, vibration, or load-holding tests.

The gas spring should be tested in its intended orientation when internal oil distribution affects damping or seal lubrication. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING can review application details and select a test plan that reflects actual duty rather than an isolated headline number. Questions to Ask a Supplier

  • What stroke percentage, speed, and cycle rate were used?

  • Was the unit loaded and correctly aligned?

  • How were temperature and force measurements controlled?

  • What failure criteria were applied?

  • Were samples inspected for leakage, noise, and rod damage?

  • Can the supplier provide a dated test report and sample size?

FAQ

Does a higher cycle number always mean a better gas spring?

No. Results are comparable only when the products are tested under similar conditions with the same acceptance criteria.

Should every production unit receive a full durability test?

No. Durability testing is normally performed on representative samples, while production units receive practical checks such as dimensional inspection, force verification, and leakage control.

What information should an OEM provide?

Share the load, stroke, mounting geometry, cycle frequency, operating temperature, environment, safety requirements, and target service life through our contact page.

A credible cycle-life result connects the test method to the real application. By reviewing force retention, mechanical condition, and functional performance, LONGXIANG GAS SPRING helps OEM teams make better durability decisions.
