Gas Spring Breakaway Force: Why Initial Movement Feels Stiff

Gas Spring Breakaway Force and Seal Friction

A gas spring may require noticeably more force to start moving than it needs once the piston rod is already in motion. This initial resistance is commonly called breakaway force or stiction. It does not automatically mean that the unit is defective. However, excessive or inconsistent breakaway force can make a lid feel jerky, increase operating effort and hide an installation problem. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING recommends evaluating both the component and the complete mechanism before changing the rated extension force.

What Creates Breakaway Force

The piston rod passes through a sealing and guiding system that keeps pressurized gas and oil inside the cylinder. When the rod remains stationary, the seal maintains close contact with its polished surface. Starting movement requires enough force to overcome static friction between these parts.

Once sliding begins, friction normally decreases. This is why a hatch may initially resist movement and then move more easily. The effect can be influenced by seal design, internal pressure, lubrication, temperature, storage time and the condition of the piston rod.

Temperature and Lubrication Effects

Low temperature can increase the viscosity of internal oil and change the behavior of elastomer seals. A gas spring that operates smoothly in a warm workshop may feel slower or stiffer when installed outdoors in winter. High temperature can also change extension force because gas pressure varies with temperature.

Where possible, conventional gas springs should rest with the piston rod pointing downward. This orientation helps keep the rod seal lubricated. The correct orientation still depends on the product design and application, so the operating position should be confirmed during selection.

Installation Problems That Increase Stiction

Breakaway resistance is not always caused inside the gas spring. Side loading can press the piston rod against the guide and create additional friction. Misaligned brackets, twisted hinges, insufficient joint articulation or contact with surrounding parts may all increase the starting force.

Disconnect one end of the gas spring only when the mechanism can be supported safely. Then check whether the hinge and panel move freely on their own. Inspect the installation through the complete opening path because alignment may appear correct when closed but become poor at mid stroke.

LONGXIANG GAS SPRING recommends checking that both mounting centers remain on the intended working plane. Ball sockets or clevis joints should rotate without reaching their angular limit. The piston rod must remain free from scratches, paint, dust and welding spatter. The cylinder and rod should not touch the frame during travel. Brackets must remain rigid under peak load, and the gas spring must not be used as the mechanical end stop.

Storage and First Cycle Behavior

A unit stored for an extended period may show higher resistance during its first movement. Several controlled cycles can redistribute lubricant across the sealing surfaces. Do not strike, heat, drill or clamp the gas spring to make it move. The cylinder contains pressurized gas and must be handled as a pressure device.

If first cycle resistance repeatedly returns, or if motion remains rough after cycling, record the temperature, storage orientation and time at rest. These details help distinguish normal seal behavior from contamination, damage or an unsuitable design.

When Replacement or Engineering Review Is Needed

Replace or investigate a gas spring that has a scored or bent rod, visible leakage, irregular extension, abnormal noise or inconsistent holding force. Increasing the nominal force is not a reliable solution for friction or poor alignment. A stronger unit may overload hinges and brackets while leaving the original problem unchanged.

For a proper review, provide the moving weight, center of gravity, hinge position, mounting coordinates, stroke, extended and compressed lengths, working temperature and required operating effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breakaway force the same as extension force?

No. Extension force describes the gas spring output under specified conditions. Breakaway force is the additional resistance that must be overcome to begin movement.

Can I lubricate the exposed piston rod?

Do not apply an unapproved grease or chemical. It may attract contamination or damage the seal. Keep the rod clean and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

Why does the mechanism move smoothly after the first cycle?

Initial movement can redistribute internal lubricant and change the contact condition between the rod and seal. Persistent or severe stiffness still requires inspection.

Conclusion

Breakaway force is affected by seal friction, lubrication, temperature, storage and installation alignment. Measuring only the nominal extension force can miss these factors. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING recommends testing the real mechanism across its full travel and correcting side load before selecting a different force.
